Matting Agents and their Benefits to Plastics Manufacturers

Matting agents are another key functional additive that delivers aesthetic benefits for plastics manufacturers. These additives modify the molded part surface to create a matte or frosted look. With the addition of matting agents, the surface gloss can be reduced, resulting in a more light-diffusing plastic part. These functional additives can add richness to a part’s appearance, therefore making the product more marketable, and giving it a perception of higher value and quality.

Reduce Gloss in Polymers

Matting agents are used to help reduce the gloss in polymers such as acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), polycarbonate (PC), and PC/ABS alloy. Matting agents help ensure that plastics don’t reflect too much light. Among the wide range of end-use products is PET polyester sheet and bottles, polyolefin films, automotive interior parts, vinyl siding, and other products. Matting agents commonly diffuse light that could potentially create a glare.

Matting agents play a key role in material selection because they eliminate the need to make sometimes difficult and costly re-surfacing adjustments to the molding tool. A stipple finish can be incorporated into a tool to provide a bumpy, rough finish which enables light to bounce off. However, these tool modifications can be expensive and time-consuming.

Matting agents are typically incorporated into masterbatch formulations for later addition during extrusion or molding of the plastic part. Most matting agents are specified for a particular type of resin.
